Set My Drivers Free

Richard Stallman, one of the main forces behind the GNU/Linux operating system and the free software movement, is in Taiwan fighting on a new front -- to get the island's PC makers to release source code for their drivers.

For me this is the greatest failing of the whole Linix thing.

Yes. It's sad but true. Linux coders have to work from scratch and in some cases forgo driver development for the simple reason that vendors won't even release their specifications (API's, etc).

Despite this - the only issue I have ever encountered with Linux NOT working with a piece of hardware is when it comes to scanners, just about everything else has been smooth sailing. Nvidia releases (usually) fairly decent video drivers for their line of video cards and Matrox is by far the most cooperative.

Basically, if you want all the lovin goodness of UNIX with incredible ease of use and no hardware fuss... a Macintosh is a wonderful alternative.
