Yes. It's sad but true. Linux coders have to work from scratch and in some cases forgo driver development for the simple reason that vendors won't even release their specifications (API's, etc).
Despite this - the only issue I have ever encountered with Linux NOT working with a piece of hardware is when it comes to scanners, just about everything else has been smooth sailing. Nvidia releases (usually) fairly decent video drivers for their line of video cards and Matrox is by far the most cooperative.
Basically, if you want all the lovin goodness of UNIX with incredible ease of use and no hardware fuss... a Macintosh is a wonderful alternative.
